Does social networking online lead to divorce?

July 24, 2014 By Crouch Group

Marital problems have probably existed since the beginning of time, with couples arguing over many issues such as finances and child rearing. Some Dallas couples may be able to resolve these issues and treat them as hurdles that they have overcome in their marriage, whereas others might find these hurdles too large to surmount. For them, may become the best option to move forward with their lives.

A new study conducted by various universities has come to a new conclusion — social media websites may increase the likelihood of divorce. According to the researchers, using media websites negatively correlates with marriage quality and happiness. In fact, it positively correlates to a troubled relationship and more thoughts about divorce. A 20 percent increase in the number of people using Facebook in a state correlates to a 2.18 percent growth in divorce in that state.

Even though the researchers stress that this study does not prove causation and there are other factors that lead to divorce, it is interesting to note the link between marriage satisfaction and social media. For example, people use networking sites to connect with old friends, flames and colleagues, and this may make it easier for some individuals to have an affair. On the other hand, people may be turning to networking sites precisely because they are unhappy with their marriage and not the other way around.

Whatever the reason, marital issues that can be resolved can lead to tensions between couples. For some, moving on with their lives and happiness may be possible through divorce. As Dallas couples put an end to their marriage, there are a lot of legal issues they will have to deal with, such as property division, custodial arrangements and alimony. It can seem overwhelming as people are coming to terms with the end of their marriage and those who require assistance may be able to speak to a divorce attorney for assistance.
