Research indicates women more content post-divorce

June 20, 2013 By legal staff - S.H.

There is no doubt that divorce can be difficult both emotionally and financially. Regardless of the reasons why a couple chooses to divorce, both spouses are likely to experience intense feelings and emotions related to hurt, anger, regret and sadness. These feelings, however, are a normal and healthy part of the grieving process.

While much has been written about how to cope with the negative feelings that often accompany divorce, new research indicates that many divorced women actually report feeling happier after a divorce is finalized. For the study, researchers in the United Kingdom surveyed some 10,000 individuals to learn how major life events, both good and bad, impact levels of happiness.

According to researchers, the results of the study indicate that divorced women are markedly more content and happy post-divorce than their male counterparts. Previous similar studies seemed to indicate that the both women and men reported the same level of contentment and happiness both pre-and post-divorce.

When discussing the study’s findings, researchers contend many women may feel liberated and free after a divorce is finalized. Women tend to stay in unhappy or unhealthy marriages for a number of reasons. Children, finances and a general sense of obligation can all weigh heavily upon an individual. It makes sense, therefore, that many divorced women report to feeling happier when the decision to divorce is finally made.

Of course divorce is not all rainbows and butterflies. The actual process of untangling two lives, dividing assets and figuring out child custody matters can be stressful and contentious. It’s wise, therefore that Texas residents planning to divorce consult with an attorney who can provide advice and guidance through the divorce process.
