Griffith seeking divorce, spousal support from husband

June 12, 2014 By legal staff - W.C.

Eighteen years of marriage may not sound like a lot to Dallas residents but for most Hollywood couples, 18 years is nearly an eternity.  This is how long actors Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith were married before Griffith filed for divorce late last month.  According to the divorce petition, the reasons for the divorce are irreconcilable differences.

The two first worked together on a movie in 1995 and got married a year later.  Banderas was Griffith’s fourth husband.  He was vocally very supportive of her during her addiction problems and both supported various charities together, and also hosted a fundraiser for the President of the United States at their home.  Together, they have a 17-year-old daughter.

Both have successful careers in Hollywood, with Banderas lending his voice to popular animated movies; the actor also has two new movies coming out.  Griffith also turned to television work recently, guest starring in various famous shows.  According to her filing, she is seeking spousal support.  However, her court documents also show that she is apparently willing to shoulder her own attorney’s fees.  Attorney’s fees can be a topic of contention in divorce, so Griffith’s willingness to pay may be a sign that the divorce could run relatively smoothly.

Still, when a celebrity couple gets a divorce, complex property division issues can arise.  Spousal support, and child support in the case of children, are also pertinent legal issues that need to be addressed, whether the couple is famous or not.  These are divorce legal issues that Dallas residents also frequently face.  An experienced divorce attorney may be able to help divorcing couples through the legal maze so parties can concentrate on the emotional reorganization that may come with ending a marriage.
