For many parents who do not reside with the co-parent of their children, finding a way to maintain the day-to-day interactions with their kids that strengthen a parent-child relationship is an important and lasting concern. Paula Lock Smyth Law Offices is a family law firm based in Dallas, Texas, that aggressively advocates for parents, helping them secure the time they deserve with their children.

Texas Standard Possession Schedule

Texas has a standard visitation schedule, which the Court often presumes to be in the best interests of children over the age of 3. The Standard Texas Possession schedule gives parenting time to the noncustodial parent on the 1st, 3rd and 5th weekends of the month and one evening during the week. It also makes provisions for summer and holidays.

The Texas Family Code does not have a standard schedule for children under the age of three, instead giving the judge authority to determine a schedule that fits the child’s best interests. Often this includes more frequent contact with the noncustodial parent, for shorter amounts of time.

Use of the standard possession schedule is not absolute. Paula Lock Smyth takes a proactive approach to parenting time schedules, helping clients find viable arrangements that work with their families’ schedules, living situations and preferences. She encourages clients to work with co-parents and helps to protect her clients’ rights during negotiation sessions and in a collaborative law setting.
