Family situations can change drastically over time. Often arrangements that were made when children were young and family members had different schedules stop being viable and no longer serve any family member’s best interests.

Paula Lock Smyth is an experienced family law attorney who represents clients throughout Dallas, Texas, and the surrounding areas in a variety of child custody and visitation cases, including petitions for modification of a court order.

Modifications of Custody Agreements_ Under what circumstances might a court allow a child conservatorship agreement to be modified?

Petitioning To Change Custody Agreements

In general, courts require parents to wait at least a year before they can petition for a change in conservatorship after the initial order has been handed down. Petitions for change may be granted for a wide variety of reasons, as long as a parent can show that there has been a “material and substantial change of circumstances” for the parent or the child.

In situations where there is a serious concern for a child’s welfare, the court will consider modification at any time. If you believe that an urgent change is necessary for your family, Paula Lock Smyth Law Offices can help explain your options and how to move forward.

After more than 25 years as a family law attorney, Paula Lock Smyth has the background and courtroom skill necessary to help parents secure modifications that fit their current situation. She is a steadfast advocate who goes above and beyond to help her clients achieve their goals, regardless of how the odds are stacked against them.
