Red Flags That Indicate Divorce Is in the Future

July 31, 2026 By Paula Lock Smyth

If you notice communication breaking down, secrecy increasing, or your spouse’s behavior changing in unusual ways, these may be warning signs for your marriage. Recognizing these signs early gives you an opportunity to seek help, improve communication, and possibly repair the relationship before divorce becomes the only option.

Red Flag # 1 – Communication Starts to Break Down

One of the most common warning signs in a marriage is a breakdown in communication. If you and your spouse no longer talk openly, avoid important conversations, or feel unheard, it may signal a growing dissatisfaction in the relationship.

Healthy marriages rely on communication. When those conversations begin to disappear or turn into arguments, unresolved issues grow larger over time.

Red Flag #2 – Secrecy and Suspicious Behavior

Another red flag is secrecy. If your spouse opens a new email account, refuses to share information that they once shared freely, or begins receiving mail at another location, it may indicate that something has changed.

You may also notice secretive phone calls, late-night conversations, or efforts to hide online activity. While these actions do not automatically mean divorce is likely, they deserve attention and honest discussion.

Red Flag #3 – Spending More Time Away from Home

Changes in routine can also signal trouble. If your spouse is spending more time away from home without a clear reason, it can point to emotional distance within the marriage.

People naturally develop new interests and hobbies throughout life. However, when those interests consistently pull one spouse away from the relationship and family life, it can be a sign that your connection is weakening.

Red Flag # 4 – Changes in Your Relationship Dynamic

Any major shift in how you and your spouse interact should not be ignored. If affection disappears, conversations become rare, or one spouse seems emotionally disconnected, it could be time to take a closer look at what is happening.

Relationships evolve over time. If you are no longer keeping up with each other’s lives, interests, and concerns, the distance between you may continue to grow.

Red Flags Do Not Mean Divorce Is Inevitable

The good news is that these warning signs do not automatically lead to divorce. Many couples recognize their problems, seek help, and rebuild their relationship.

Marriage counseling, individual counseling, or assistance from mental health professionals can help reopen communication and identify the root cause of the issues. Guidance from a trusted pastor, priest, or faith leader may also provide valuable support. Taking action early provides a greater opportunity to repair the relationship before problems deepen.

Divorce Is a Serious Decision

Few people get married expecting their relationship to end in divorce. For that reason, it is important to carefully consider all options before moving forward with a divorce.

In many situations, one spouse has already decided they no longer want to work on the marriage. Even then, it is worth asking whether every reasonable effort has been made to save the relationship. Thoughtful reflection and professional guidance can help you determine the best path forward for your future.

FAQs

1. Does poor communication always lead to divorce?

No. Communication problems are a warning sign, but many couples improve their relationship through counseling, honest conversations, and a commitment to working through issues together.

2. Should I be concerned if my spouse suddenly becomes secretive?

A sudden increase in secrecy may indicate problems within the marriage. While it does not automatically mean divorce is coming, it is important to address the issue and discuss your concerns openly.

3. What should I do if I notice these red flags in my marriage?

Consider speaking with a marriage counselor, mental health professional, or trusted faith leader. Addressing concerns early may help repair the relationship and improve communication before the situation worsens.
